Reading Time, Speaking Time, and Readability Explained
What reading level means, how reading time is estimated, and how to make dense writing easier to scan.
Reading time estimates usually assume 200–250 words per minute for silent reading. Speaking averages closer to 120–150 words per minute.
Readability formulas combine sentence length and syllable complexity. They are guides, not grades of intelligence.
To improve flow: prefer one idea per sentence, cut stacked clauses, and replace abstract nouns with verbs.
Keyword density is another signal, not a target. Natural writing usually keeps important terms recurring without stuffing.
Use reading level as an audience check for kids explainers, consumer emails, and support docs.
